What you'll find here...

Along with reporting any news about my books and their offspring, I plan to use this blog as a place to post interesting musings I come across about the writing process and about actors' processes for creating characters. Just as soon as I get around to it; stay tuned.

Remembering my Mom - 2/25/1911 - 7/27/2014

This was a voice message she left for me circa 1990s; it's a great way to remember her.

Just discovered: this video feature on the film's premiere

It includes the most complete synopsis I've seen of the film plus interviews with Caroline and footage of us at the premiere.  I don't know why I never saw this before, but here it is.  The part about us starts at 5:26.

Death of a Golden Boy Ripples Through a Family
(New York Times
review by Stephen Holden)
Like "Ordinary People," "A Year Ago in Winter," adapted by Ms. Link from "Aftermath," a novel by the American author Scott Campbell, is a study of the fallout from unconscious hubris within a family for which failure is not an option....  You could describe this movie by Ms. Link, whose film "Nowhere in Africa" won a 2002 Oscar for best foreign-language film, as a precisely calibrated and persuasively acted mood piece that doesn't throw you a reassuring lollipop.  Read the whole review here.

Film Director Caroline Link - The Tangled Webs Families Weave
In her films the Munich director and Oscar winner, Caroline Link, places great emphasis on the subject of family. She has now made her fourth feature film called "Im Winter ein Jahr" (international title - A Year Ago In Winter) - an intense family drama...

Watch this!

A delightful talk about the value of rest and play to creativity.

A Year Ago in Winter has won Finland's second annual Finnkino Prize; the audience voted for their favorite film from eight nominees screened at the Helsinki International Film Festival.

Just learned that the film won the Crystal Gryphon - Campania Bank Award at Italy's Giffoni Festival, for its treatment of the characters' evolving personalities and relationships.

Near as I can tell, since I don't read Italian, A Year Ago in Winter just won the Rosa D'Oro Award in the Schermi d'Amore Film Festival in Verona.  If you know Italian, you can read about it here.

The German Film Awards were held Friday night in Berlin.  As expected, A Year Ago in Winter lost out on the award for best film to a tale about China's Oskar Schindler, but it did take the runner-up silver best film award (who knew that even existed?) and it won the award for best music.  Not a bad showing at all, especially when combined with the honors for best director and best young performer in the Bavarian Film Awards.

You can hear some of the music here:

Tango for Max
Lilli's Melody

The film also features this amazing song by Peter Gabriel:

Signal to Noise
